The Conference offers a number of additional activities and services:

Meditation & Shrine Room

There will be a meditation room open in the conference center from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Tibet Gifts will be our bookseller this year, offering a wide variety of dharma books and handcrafts from the Himalayas.

Local Sanghas will be sponsoring a confluence of Dharma talks, retreats, lectures and book signings of our featured speakers and authors. These appearances will taking place in the weeks before and after the 2008 Conference, both in the Chicago area and throughout the Midwest.

Description:  Dr. Marasinge will speak about her work promoting and protecting child rights in Sri Lanka. In 2005 she pioneered a compnay, Child Right Law Guarantee Limited. She will also speak of her work with Rev. Hoeberichts on the Psycho-Spiritual Project to support people devastated by the Tsunami that struck Sri Lanka in 2004.

Engaged Buddhism and the Path to Putting Compassion into Action Sensei Joan Hoeberichts, recipient of 2008 of the BCM’s Women and Engaged Buddhism Award and Ven. Molini Rai, PhD & Ven. Description:  Author of A Child's Right to Privacy in International Law, Dr. Marasinghe will describe her work comparing the laws of countries throughout the world with the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child.
She will examine issues including the legal, cultural, religious and political context of understanding and ensuring privacy rights of children and those who care for them in institutional as well as family settings.

Description:  Psycho-Spiritual Healing After Trauma and Disaster:
Dr. Marasinghe co-founded a unique cross-cultural counseling program with Buddhist, Christian and Jewish therapists coordinated with Joan Hoeberichs of the Heart Sangha in Montclair, New Jersey after the 2004 tsunami disaster. Village-based counselors use counseling techniques which integrate meditation, traditional Sri Lankan values and understanding of the spirit, letter and practice of the law to prevent and resolve conflict, offer solace and support to people living with the stresses of civil war, poverty, and other trauma.
Dr. Marasinghe will describe how the program works in rural Sri Lanka and how it can apply elsewhere.
